Gas Pipe Scramble
- Hundreds of miles of high pressure natural gas lines thread the hills and valleys and plateaus from Bakersfield to Los Angeles, with perilous consequences. After time and earthquakes and erosion, the pipes sag and twist and finally crack--and sometimes ignite. The Oak Ridge Fault disturbs them, as do the many drainage ditches and creeks they must follow and span on the way. Here a road washout takes a number of pipes old and new with it. Repairs will feature longer-sectioned pipes running through the landscape, while our "suspect terrain" still holds many dangers.
